Las especies del aire o la búsqueda de la luz
Es raro encontrar un libro de poemas dedicados al ballet. Raro en Europa que es donde nació como representación y como ilusión. Raro en América Latina donde estamos, sin duda, nutridos por la magia del cuerpo al moverse y al hablar. Raro incluso en Cuba que es uno de los países más musicales del mundo y cuya tradición danzística es reconocida por todos. Pero si partimos de este doble supuesto es quizás comprensible que sea en esta isla donde se haya escrito Las especies del aire.
Sabemos que la danza ha llamado la atención de los escritores cubanos desde Alejo Carpentier y José Lezama Lima hasta Eliseo Diego y Raúl Hernández Novás. Roberto Méndez también se inserta en esta inquietud estética que busca abrazar la palabra con el movimiento. Como sus antecesores en Cuba, ha ido a esas fuentes primordiales, cuando se trata de atrapar la magia del salto en el escenario, que son Mallarmé y Valéry. El primero de ellos busca la perpetuidad del gesto en las ninfas que acompañan a su fauno. El segundo, de Athikté, dice que la danza le sale del cuerpo como una flama. Roberto Méndez va tras esa misma senda, momento la llama el Sócrates de Valéry, forjada en la fugaz revelación que deja el cuerpo al danzar. “A sus pies nace un río que eternamente fluye. / Danzando ella sabe que reinicia el universo”, dice Méndez en uno de sus poemas.
Desde el primer verso de Las especies del aire hasta el último, pasando por sus epígrafes, estamos en el verdadero centro del ballet. Éste y no otro es la intensa y agónica búsqueda del milagro. Ese salto cuyo resplandor hace que el cuerpo sea un haz de luz y todo a su alrededor sombras. Las bailarinas de Méndez atraviesan la palabra. La flauta y el violín las llama. Y ellas acuden entre frenéticas y tristes. Se contemplan en el lento giro de sus piernas. Se detienen en el ángulo que producen sus brazos. Ansían la continuación en el tiempo y el espacio, sabiendo que todo, más allá de ellas, es penumbra e incertidumbre
Leer Las especies del aire es, además, recorrer un vasto escenario de luminiscencias. Y ver, envueltos en ellas, a Nijinski y a Hamlet, a Pavlova y a Ravel, a Picasso y a Ofelia, a Stravinski y a Don Quijote, a Orfeo y a Fuller, a Gluck y a Nureyev. Este libro nace, evoluciona y alcanza un clímax con ellos para después desvanecerse en el silencio. Y los bailarines que nombra son, de algún modo, fantasmas ebrios suspendidos entre la movilidad y la quietud. Vagas figuras que saben, sin embargo, una verdad esencial: “lo inútil de todo gesto si no nace en él la luz”.
En Las especies del aire estamos pues ante la elevación y la caída. Y no me refiero sólo a estos aspectos primordiales de la danza. Hablo de esas dos orillas propias del sueño donde nacimiento y muerte, epifanía y ocultación son las claves de toda búsqueda. Y qué buscan entonces los poemas de Roberto Méndez. Como la música, como el secreto que se oculta en el tiempo, como el vértigo brotado del salto, buscan la permanencia. Y la permanencia en la poesía no es más que un destello. La urgencia de tal vislumbre es lo que hace que estos poemas se tracen en el papel. Una urgencia que se torna ansiedad, melancolía, locura. En estos estados fluctúa el lector de Las especies del aire. Un lector que, como Méndez, está sediento de luz y logra entrar en lo extraordinario. Acceder a lo imposible, como diría Valéry, en el íntimo horizonte de la lectura. Para que luego se establezca la unánime oscuridad.
